Projects, Facilities & Construction Technical Luncheon: Decision Support For Optimizing Unconven

Achieving higher efficiency is a key value-driver in today’s challenging business environment. Efficiency, particularly in unconventional play development, is dependent upon how optimal the physical layout, configuration and phasing are for the overall project. Traditional early asset planning methods are not easily able to explore tradeoffs to determine optimal solutions, while also considering the key social, environmental, technical and economic factors that potentially influence design decisions. As a result, projects may experience unplanned regulatory complexity, drilling and/or construction delays, or sub-optimal water supply and storage during peak activity periods.

This presentation will introduce an integrated decision support approach, and suite of tools for infrastructure planning and strategic water management to assist in the design of a more optimized footprint over the life-span of an unconventional project. This approach allows for social, environmental, technical and economic factors to be imbedded into the planning and design process, while simulating multiple “what if?” scenarios to determine the best and most efficient configuration.

In the Kaybob Duvernay this approach has led to significant reductions to early phase planned capital expenditures (10-30%) through achieving a more compact and suitable footprint layout (e.g., fewer/smaller pipelines and facilities) and improved water use.
